Kevin Clarke is an insect artist and biologist who owns and operates Bug Under Glass, the first and only Green Certified insect display business in the country.
His lifelong passion and concern for the insects (especially ants) influenced him to pursue a Master’s degree in Conservation Biology and publish a scientific paper on insect conservation. His business endeavors are also focused on conservation and insect education. Bug Under Glass only uses species of insects that are sustainably raised and farmed as part of conservation programs all over the world. Most of these programs raise butterflies for the live flying butterfly exhibits; Kevin obtains the deceased ones and gives them a new life.
His insect art has been featured in Pottery Barn & West Elm catalogs as well as in Apartment Therapy and Décor 8. You can witness some of his elaborate and unique beetle diorama pieces here and if you are lucky, a piece or two is sometimes offered on his ETSY shop.
Taking great pride in his craft, he uses only archival mounting papers, seals his displays like museums do, and provides a biological story about the insects inside – a museum quality combination not found anywhere else.
Kevin has worked all over the world; pouring beers in a London pub, picking grapes on an Italian farm, studying in Belgium, and researching ants in a South African museum. He has finally settled in San Francisco with his wife and an attention-seeking cocker spaniel.
